Hmm… It appears Sgt Bergdahl is in “remarkably good shape”

Remember, The Obama Administration’s prime reason for sidestepping Congress was they feared for Sgt. Bergdahl’s health:

“We believed that the information we had, the intelligence we had, was such that Sgt. Bergdahl’s safety and health were in jeopardy,” Hagel said. “In particular his health was deteriorating. It was our judgment that if we could find an opening and move very quickly, we needed to get him out of there, essentially to save his life.”

Now, let’s hear what NBC News Chief Pentagon Correspondent, Jim Miklaszewski, had to say this morning on the topic:

And the Administration’s narrative just keeps falling apart

Wow, that is damaging to the administration’s rationale. Just one more thing that is good in itself, but undermines the policy rationale expressed by the administration. I do feel sorry for Bergdahl though. Whatever the circumstances of his leaving his unit, years of captivity followed by an ignominious rescue, and to be forever defined by an act of youthful misjudgment (a la Lewinsky)–sad.

If he is indeed guilty of desertion, or worse collaboration with the enemy, I do not consider that a Lewinsky-esque youthful misjudgment.

The problem with that construction of it is I doubt we will ever truly know all the relevant facts. I consider it possible but not likely. Political incentives do have a way of bringing out facts that would otherwise remain obscure, but those same incentives have a way of further obscuring facts, warping our interpretation of them, and producing a false sense of conflicting certainties often along ideological lines. Bottom line though: scum bag, mis-calculating youth, or patriot–this guy is at the center of an international political controversy that is likely to hang over him the rest of his life. Any human being who thinks about that for a moment can appreciate this fact.
