What would Martin Luther King Jr. say?

This video is starting to go viral and I feel it is important. Martin Luther King III has called for the Department of Justice to file civil rights charges against George Zimmerman.

Why?

He doesn’t know:

Wouldn’t dad be proud?

Perhaps he should consult the ACLU who sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder explaining that charges should NOT be filed against Zimmerman. It begins:

We are writing to clearly state the ACLU’s position on whether or not the Department of Justice (DOJ) should consider bringing federal civil rights or hate crimes charges as a result of the state court acquittal in the George Zimmerman case. Even though the Supreme Court permits a federal prosecution following a state prosecution, the ACLU believes the Double Jeopardy Clause of the Constitution protects someone from being prosecuted in another court for charges arising from the same transaction. A jury found Zimmerman not guilty, and that should be the end of the criminal case.

After citing actions the federal government can take to help communities in preventing further tragedies similar to what happened in Sanford, Florida; the letter also recognizes that while actions by law enforcement influence average citizens, they:

realize that the alleged conduct of private citizens like George Zimmerman is beyond the scope of the End Racial Profiling Act and the Department of Justice Guidance Regarding the Use of Race by Federal Law Enforcement Agencies.

The ball is in Eric Holder’s court.

  1. The kid is an idiot.

I had my differences with some of MLK’s statements, but at their heart there was a lot of good stuff…

  2. Ali Dawson says:

What would make him think that Trayvons parents would be taking advice from him on any subject. I’m sure they will be suing him they are just waiting for the Justice Department to make their decision. That’s when they will announce a lawsuit, they don’t want anything to impede on a criminal investigation, that could slow it down. Believe me they will eventually sue him and he won’t be able to avoid testifying then. That’s the problem the Justice Department, while they aren’t in a hurry to charge him, they don’t want him to get on a stand and appear guilty. That wouldn’t bode well for the justice system in this country, it would clearly show to different classes of people.
