Federal healthcare benefits for the undocumented?

I know.

Sundays I save as my day to laugh.

I’m not in a laughing mood.

Yesterday, in the process of approving their budget, by the overwhelming margin of 50-49, the Senate voted down an amendment that would deny access to healthcare under Medicaid or the Affordable Care Act for undocumented immigrants who get a green card. The amendment failed  43-56.

The amendment was submitted by Senator Jeff Sessions. He argued;

If a person is in our country illegally and they are rewarded with some legal status, do they then immediately become eligible for federal health care benefits, it’s a different situation than someone who came legally and has got legal status.

Afterwards, Senator Session stated that providing these services “will dramatically accelerate the insolvency of our entitlement programs and is unfair to American workers and taxpayers.”

If that’s not enough to get you in a foul mood. Here is a commercial running in California. First you have tor read their introduction:

Thousands of young people throughout California can only dream about health care. They want to live healthy responsible lives.  But that’s hard to do when you can’t see a doctor or you don’t have health insurance.

Check out this 30 second video, “Dreaming of Healthcare.” We made it in partnerships with a group of young Californians. They’re all undocumented. Technically that means  they’re not US citizens. But we think they couldn’t be more Californian.

California should not be a place that says some young people deserve healthcare and some don’t. Access to  screenings and checkups helps people prevent problems before they start. When healthcare includes everyone, and we mean everyone, that keeps us all healthy. We’re in this together.

Check out #Health4all and help us spread the word that California’s health depends on everyone.  Everyone.  Learn more about us at http://www.calendow.org

Aren’t you glad I shared my good mood with you?

Just so you don’t leave with an awful taste in your mouth, let me send you over to newsbusters so you can watch Bill Maher call Americans morons before blaming the Senate weapons ban failure on gerrymandering. The look on his face when told there is no gerrymandering in the Senate is priceless.
